HOROWHENUA MEETING TO-MOR-ROW.

Although the weather has been somewhat unsettled of late, an improvement has been, apparent during the last, two days, and the chances of dry going to-morrow are favourable. Weather means much to the meeting, and with the prospects good, the day should turn out well for the club.

During (he last lew months the club has had various improvements carried out, and the appointments arc more up-to-date now than they have

been in the past. The track, too, has had a lot of attention from Caretaker Yuile, and there should be no complaints about the going. I’he course lias always had the reputation of being fast, and there is no reason why some smart times should not be registered to-mor-row.

Some early arrivals put in an appearance at the beginning of the week, and a good, string were doing exercise gallops this morning and afternoon.

The hold-up of the shipping liras resulted in a number of North Island horses being still in Ihe South,, but only one acceptor for the Levin meeting in Priniemps is among those affected.

Tile club is acting wisely in having a 10/ tote as well as £1 for the ’"'-•'nig. This will meet with appro- ;>! Imm large numbers of patrons, iudg.-ng liy the- success of the innovaiion tit the lost, two Otaki fixtures, ihe in tickets will he on sale in the ■mlsbie enclosure 10-inorrow, and £1 -it tlte inside.

Amyl has is reported to be doing good work at Otaki.

Mrs ■]. Rcbhington Tins presented the Horowhemia Racing Club with n goldmomiied whip to be given to the rider of flic winner of tile Cup to-morrow. To-morrow’s programme: will commence wfih the Hurdles, lor which there is the: good held of 14, and among them are several horses that have raced successfully on the flat, among (hem Kail, Waimatoa, Pacific sdope and Island. Kail got among the money at (lie last Horowhemia. meeting, and if hc ! can jump should be hard to heat to-morrow. Thirteen are on the card in the Welter Hack, seven furlongs. Yankee Dan heads the weights with 0.3, and concedes 121 bto Snatcher and Millmire. who are next on the- list. The lop weight, however, looks like holding liis own in this company. Admiration was galloping well a season or so hack, and if lie can muster up his old pace may ho among (he loaders. 'llie locally-owned Pleasure, is among the held, and a win to her 'popular owner is about due.

'Pile Levin Mack of six furlongs has attracted a field of 11. with the Fox-ton-owned Helen Rufus (TO) and Flying Nell 18.13) at the head of the list. Tins pair should make the pace warm for the rest, and should he well in the division of the stakes.

The big event, Hie Cup, will have special interest on account of Ire champion Amythas being among the acceptors. The son of Demosthenes lias been on the retired list for some Time, hut his galloping ability is such that an impost of 10.13 should not trouble him much. It is regrettable Hint Printemps is prevented from starting owing to being hung tip in the South Island, ns the Autnmnns gelding is performing welt at present, ami would have found plenty of supporters. Of the others, Dissertation and Makere are a good pair, ami it would not bo surprising to see the after running forward at the business end of the journey. Merry Day, Halifax, Reloved and Satin are the other starters.

Fourteen are in the Lake Hack, of a mile and a distance. Flying Nell ha.s been given 0.0, and on her recent form is .evidently galloping well. Basso can muster up some pace, and so can All Cerise.

Iho McDonald Memorial, seven furlongs, with 1G starters, has the best field of the day in (he evenness of Hie class. As(inom,e and Blackmail are weighted a( 0.5, and among (he others are Makere, Princess Pat, Kura, Waimatoa, Probate, Helen Rufus and Flying Noll and Kikini. It is a very °l>eii rare, and should give the punfers some trouble in locating the winner. There are several among the field fhal should run well, and the race should he ni good one. A score are engaged in the Hokio Hack, a five furlong flutter. Cochineal and Miss Reno are a, useful pair, but the others will take some sorting out.

Fighfoen will contest the Maiden of six lurlongs, a race that wears an open appearance, mid anything might win.

Hector Gray is expected to arrive in Auckland at the latter pari of next month. ]( is said that he will be riding in New Zealand at some of the Christmas meetings, hut he is hooked for an early return to England. His son is now attached to one of the leading (raining stables, and is said to be "oiling along all serene.
