CONCLUDING DAY, AT AWAPUNI
The Manawatu Racing Club’s Summer Meeting concluded yesterday in brilliant weather, and for a third day the attendance was very good. The sum of £46,264 was handled by the totahsator, as against £64,252 for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £156,622, being a decrease of £41,434 compared with last year’s figures.
it was a. day out for Nursing Sister. The Solferino mare was the outsider in the Liverpool .Handicap, the big event of the day, in which a goodclass field was engaged. Getting well away trom the barrier, she showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition, and won from end to end. Sycorax (placed on the first two days) and Askar! (a winner on the first day) were second and third respectively.
Nursing Sister went out again in the Kawau six furlong event, and. won comfortably from Celmisia (the favourite) with Jovial third. On his winning form on Tuesday, Ore Ore was lavourite in the hurdles, but tipped out early in the race. Ngakanui took charge along the back, but Opiate U ll the money on the two previous days) challenged boldly, and a great race resulted. Ngakanui himg on long enough, to win by half a length, with Spook third. Capping Day, who was much fancied in her previous start, won the Juvenile Handicap with the assistance of the well-known horseman, H. Gray.
Lady Kotiripo annexed the Whitmore Handicap. She made the early running, and cracking on the pace, was a length to the good from Royal Gift at the post. Rimutaka was third, and Sweet Song (the lavourite) unplaced. The Westbury Handicap went to Passionless, with Ducalion second cii ll i uouctmeni lourih.
A good field turned out in tfie Clandeboye Handicap, of which,Callaghan was favourite. The Leviutrained American Beauty was first
away, with War Baby and Detroit next. Coining into the straight the favourite and Printemps joined the leader. A hard-fought finish saw Callaghan reach the post a neck in front, of Printemps, with Deiroit third and American Beauty fourth.
Kuia annexed the Christmas Weller from a field of a dozen, of which Tribonlei was' favourite. Kuia and Ovid were fighting out fhe finish when nn outsider in Hedlogue appeared on the scone. She beat Ania out of second place, and went after Kuia and was only half a length away at the finish. Hedlogue returned her backers a solid dividend for second place. The celebrated horseman, H. Gray, was riding at Awapuni yesterday, but only rode one winner.
Maniahera, Tigrinia, Makero, Cham Royal, Molyneaux, Rose Wreath, Admiral Codrington, Strategy and Festivity, who has been engaged at the Manawatu, races this week, figure in the weights for Monday's racing at Auckland. -
The Levin-trained Prince Ferouz is racing on the West Coast. At Hokitika on Tuesday he ran a third, and yesterday finished second to Battle Scene in the Hokitika Cup.
