THE SONOMA’S SOVEREIGNS.
(Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) Sydney, December 30,
The Sonoma has arrived. Details of the gold robbery supplied by the officers show that extended search by the detectives failed to locate the missing sovereigns. Then Mr Knudsen, assistant engineer, when tapping a vent pipe, noticed that it sounded unusual. He investigated and found 6200 sovereigns inside.
The finding of the boxes of gold- in the harbour occurred in the following manner: A wharf labourer heard a splash and asked a nearby quartermaster—is" someone had fallen overboard. The reply was No. The wharf labourer saw a box sinking in the water and thought it was a case of whisky, so said nothing. When news of the robbery leaked out be told the officers his experiences. Tha harbour was dragged and the three missing boxes of gold, strung together, were hooked up. In the meantime the quartermaster had disappeared.
