Matthews Found Guilty. THE INSANITY PLEA. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, February 12. At the trial of Reginald Matthews for murd:r, the jury, after an hour’s retirement, returned a verdict oi guilty, and prisoner was sentenced tc death. | Expert evidence was divided as to accused’s mental condition. Dr. Crosbie, superintendent of Sunilysids Mental Hospital, considered he was insane. , He suffered from two definite delusions, that h. was capable of effecting certain reforms in sexual and social procedure, and) that ho was being persecuted. Dr.’ McKillip, superintendent at Seacliff, said ho< was quite satisfied accused was insane, and he would have no hesitation in sending him to a mental hospital. Dr. Gribhen (superintendent ut Kibikihi Mental Hospital) and Dr. Gray (superintendent at Nelson) found an evidence -whatever of insanity or delusions.
