Tax on Visitors.
SIR CONAN DOYLE’S COMMENT. . (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) Sydney, Februaiy 1. Sir Conan Doyle sails to-day by the Naldera. Paying a tribute to -he courtesy and kindness of the people, he spoke with less enthusiasm of his experience at the hands of the taxation authorities. '“I was only fifteen days in New Zealand), but they took a large sum in taxes. Ido not quite understand it. but it appears a tax on my earnings in the Dominion. I believe: I hare to pay the Australian tax authorities several hundreds. Australia never had a visitor who contributed so much to the revenue for so short l a stay, and who has taken so little from tha country,”
