The Catholic Mission that was to liavei been held' >in iLeivin to-morrow ami following days has been postponed for one or two weeks. The raissioncr, Father O'Leary, off Temiika, has been laid aside through illness and is unable to attend at present. Ordinary services will be hold at Levin to-morrow, morning and evening. Increased accommodation is needed at St. Mary's Church, Levin, an I to effect this the vestry has resolved to lengthen the cliuroh by sixteen feet and also put transepts on each side, to a width of sixteen feet. These changes will give accommodation for one hundred extra worshippers. Full particulars of the work to he dond may bo obtained on application to Mr H. J. Jones, Levin. From Messrs Abraham .and l "Williams the lion, treasurer of the Patriotic Society (Mr P. "W. 'Goldsmith) is in receipt of a cheque for £2 9s being the proceeds from a sale of a porker donated by Mr W. G. Adkin, ,and. also 10s from a gander given by Mr T. M. Burke. As these were y»oM on behalf of the special shop day carried out by Mesdames N. Kirkcaldie and F. I!. Wright for the Gift Paar-ccl-i Fund, the receipts from this shop day day now stand at £4.3 17s lid. A further cheque from Messrs Abraham and Williams for los from the sale of a dog, given by Mr H. E. : Honore, is also, thankfully acknowledged : also the generosity of the auctioneers in making these sales free of all f-iiairfl'ft- 'is much appreciated.

At the last sitting of the S.M. in I^vin, judgment was entered for the plaintiff in the only, two civil suits thait came for hearing: J. C. Milnes v. iS. 'Royal, claim £1 ss, costs "15s; and J. C. Milnes v. P. Matakateia, claim Pearce and Lionel Herbert Hodges, £2, costs 17s. The two lad's Norman who broke into the shops of Messrs. Ivess and Sims, respectively, pleaded guilty and were remanded for sentence to the Supreme Court.

At Palmeiiston 'North Philosophical Society/* s last meeting, Mr. Poynton, 6.M., spoke most interestingly concerning the climatic conditions on this coast. He said : ' 'The prevailing southwest winds, charged with moisture, which is mostly deposited on the west coast of both islands, is a climatic feature of great importance. Nelson owes its sunshine and calm to the 'barrier of Mount Arthur and his lesser neighbours, while the wet area from near D<annevirke to Bketahnna is due to the gap of aoout 30 miles in the Rniahine Mountains which stretches from Shannon to the mouth of the Manawatu Gorge. The moisture-laden western winds blow through this low saddle, and the slight elevation given to the air current by the. hills in .this gap (they cannot be called mountains) cools it sufficiently to 'bring about condensation from Woodville to Da line virke and Eketahuna. [Further south, on the west coast, near Otta.ki and '.Levin, the .mountains attain a iiaight of more tha'n. 5000 feet. In the path of the moving air they are like a huge rock in the deep-flowing river. They cause a caim or backwash of air, as the rook does in the stream of deep water. The climate of Levin Otaki are drier, sunnier and less windy than either Palmers ton North or .Wellington. The almost constantly moving mass of air meeting with the obstruction of these lofty areas is divided, and swinls around them to the south through Gook's Strait at Wellington, and to. the north through the (Shannon Gorge gap, like the water current at the sides of the obstructing rock. Thus, if ram different, but clearly recognisable causes, we have many climates which despite our complaints about the vagaries of our weather, are [ airly constant from veai to year, and in time will cause changes in the nature of our introduced flora. These different soils and climates will be found suitable to the introduction of othter plants new to us.

Private James Cooper, formerly on the teaching staff of Levin Publio School, and later of the Normal College, Wellington, is now in a gunnery school at Grantham, England, prepara tory to going to the front. He 1, sent home an interesting copy otf a camp publication entitled "The iDaily Liar; non-political and nonsensical." The journal is jealously regardful for soldiers' rights. By regulations it provides that "any barber who when shaving cuts any customer shall eat seven pounds of soft soap three times daily for one month"; and "any tailor who is employed in making a suit of clothes and shall' be detected cabbaging less than two-thirds of the said cloth shall sit on his red-hot goose for an hour."

.Mrs. Mcintyre and Miss BeJingham were in charge of the Red Cross shop at Levin last Saturday, when the sum of £10 18s 8d was taken. The committee wishes to thank the following for donations of produce, etc.:—Mesdames J. Prouse, .Reading, B. R. Gardener, Goldsmith, Chaplin, -Murray, F. P. Walk ley, Dempsey, Kirkcaldie, R. G. A writer in the Sydney Sun states that the Italian Army can claim to be as democratic as any in Europe. Its men fight for less than 2d a day, and its officers get very little more. It looks to the State to provide all its needs in clothing and weapons, and to care for its wounded and its dependents. Further, it asks for only those few pence for little personal necessities. It takes no pay for fighting for

its country,
