Levin lied Cross Society's special efforts to raise money for the Soldiers' Christmas Parcels Fund has resulted in a handsome total. A sum of £•50 had been guaranteed towards this object by the Levin branch; actually the receipts from the special sales held layt Saturday and last Tuesday ran to between £07 and .£OB. The shop was run by Mesdames li. R. Gardener and R. iStansell on the Saturday, and by .Mis. X. Kirkcaldie on Tuesday. The Saturday's takings wore close upon £27; and on Tuesday close upon £41. Such a combined result is highly grati fying, and the lied Cross branch and its many practical helpers dcscrvo warm congratulations.
An interesting lecture on Mesopo-
tamia was delivered in Lovin last Thursday by Mr J. T. Xl.tt, M.A. He traced back the ■history of th'is ancient country, and showed liow it had deteriorated from it's pristine glory to its present state of desolation The irruption of the Turk into Europe some 900 years ago* marked the turning point for the worse in Mesopotamia's history, and it has to-day become a more shadow of its old self. Mr Xott, quoting the Hon. D. 'Llovd Gerge's phrase, eaid that if Mesopotamia were freed from the 'blighting blast of the Turk the place again would blossom as the rose.
Mr Barrie Marschel, the well-known author-actor,, lis' in Levin arranging for Exhibition ;at Farland's pictures on Saturday nest of the propagandist picture "Where are My Children?"
Ntet iSunday morning a special memorial service will be held in the Methodist Church, Levin, in memoriam of the late Mrs W. ! G. Adkin. The Ttev. W. .H. ID, Abbey will be l ttlia preacher.
Mrs Harrison Lee Cowie, the prominent temperance advocate, will be present in Levin on Tuesday next. She will hold a meeting in the Century Hall at 7.30 p.m., nnder the auspices of the "Strength of the [Nation Movement." All interested in ,'iquor reform are invited to attend.
Arrangements are being made for the delivery of a War Lecture in Levin by Mr. C. J.Parr, M.P. The lion secretary of the Levin Patriotic Society, Mr. G. S. Keedwell, has been in communication with Mr. Parr, who has expressed liis willingness to lecture in Levin in three or four weeks' time from present date, if his public engagements permit. It is intended to fix the lecture, provisionally for -14th' or 17th Sepember.
