"LET US LOOK THINGS IN THE FACE."
(To The Editor.) Sir,—Now that the young and strongest of our nation are going to the front, and are giving their lives for the protection of homes, it is of immense importance that they should go in the best of health and strength, and also we here in New Zealand should reduce all orn* unnecessary expenses to help in the one great object of defeating the Germany who have proved themselves to be such a cruel despotic nation from tyrannizing over the whole world. In the first place we ought to do away with the drink curse, and then we might .reduce our tobacco to the great advantage of the community; our meat-bill might be reduced by one-half. And then there is the saving that might be made on horse-racing, pictures, and many"other things which would help considerably. This is how to save over ten millions pounds a year, <and so help our army at the front. Oh, mean, selfish New Zealanders. Where is your boasted Christianity? For while your boys are going to the front to fight a callous, cruel enemy, who is desecrating, robbing, torturing, maiming, crashing, brutalizing and murdering your fellow creature, a large portion of you are spending your incomes in a life k>f selfish pleasure and enjoyment. Does it not seem a disgrace that we, having the presumption to call ourselves Christians, should he left .behind by Russia, who has shown us suoli a
good example and now has proved to the whole world the .immense advantage of doing away with the liquor traffic. Let us then be up and doing', and be. prepared to make grout sacrifices in luxuries, time and money to obtain this groat end. which will not only immensely help on our-soldiers but will afco elevate the whole of our nation.—l am, etc., AX HONEST SCEPTIC. -No. 2. Hoatlierlea, Jan. 18th, 1917.
