Levin School Committee's benefit concert in aid of the picnic fund of the schools ■■-, takes place this evening (Tuesday) in the Century Hall. An excellent programme of music, recitations, and action songs has been prepared. Woolly aphis may be dime away with (Mr H. Newport remarked at a meeting held in Levin last night), by grafting or budding some eighteen inchcß above the ground. This system is Mr Newport's own device, and he contends that if it is consistently followed out the nursery stock will become free from the_ disease. He lias an orchard in Levin, eight years old, that he has not had to front once for woolly aphis, and he attributes this immunity to high grafting. Mr Newport thinks a law should be passed making high grafting or budding compulsory.
A (luoruni attended last night's monthly meeting of Leviu Chamber oi Commerce, notwithstanding the wet Aveather. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from the Mayor (Mr Gardener), aud Mr M. Fusella. The presidest (Mr 10. S. Lancaster) was in the chair, and there also were present Messrs A. Deinpsey, H. Newport, D. Smart, W. H. AVilson, G. P. Brown and A. Grover (secretary). Incidental reference was made to the effectiveness of the chambers action in regard to closer settlement, and the opinion was expressed that in this one aspect the chamber had justified its existence, apart from any other activities. The references
were based upon the approaching subdivision of the Heath erica lands acquired by the Government from Mr T. Jl. McDonald, for purposes of closer settlement. Other matters discussed by the meeting are noted in separate paragraph's Tn to-day's Chronicle. All owners of cottages at the liokio township are complaining that they have had their eotkges broken into and various articles stolen. .Recently two men went out there with a trap and secured everything they could lay their hands on; they even went as far us going under various cottages and taking away bottles that children had collected. From one place they removed several dozen. In a house belonging to Mr Fosella, there were two or Ihree dozon bottles inside— and those are gone. The thieves entered by the window. The matter is being placed in v tlic hands of the police, and it is to bo hoped that these men will be run to dock.
