Horowhenua Boating Club.

CARXIVAL AND ART UNION. Favoured by line weather on "Wedt'i' day evening, the llorowheniiii Moating Ciub'.s committee were rewarded by a record attendance at their iuinual ('arnivial on the Lake, and without a doubt this year's gathering compared very favourably with that of past years. The interior of the shed had been tastefully decorated with evergreens and drapery, displaying tin; club colours, and was illuminated with numbers of Chinese lanterns. The outside jetty and the club's rowing boats were also d'-corated with coloured lant'Tiis. the whole effect alter dark b"ing most attractive, and called , forth many comments, as «lso did the bonfire and coloured Bengal fires displayed before isunrise. The onlookers on the roof of the boatshed and on the jetty as well as the occupants of the rowing boats enjoyed these items thoroughly. The floor of the main part of the shod had been prepared for dancing by a specially light-hciarted member of the committee, who also acted as ALC., and it was admitted by the dancers that his efforts had been crowned with .success. Air Kearsley'e orchestra, consisting of .Messrs Krarslo.v, Sloan and Williams, rendered the dance music and various selections in their usual finished style and, notwithstanding a warm night, tempted many to keep time with feet and motion to the dreamy waltz or the lively ncottische. During an interval Afr Grover, who carried out his task in a very businesslike manner, announced that the drawing of the prize would then take place. Messrs Storey and Shaw consented to watch the proceedings on behalf of the ticketholderis. Little ATiss Jessie Afaeintosh was persuaded to extract tifv< marble with the In/dry holder's number on it from the barrel. This was "N T o. BG. and on reference to the ticket block Air Grover announced it to he Mrs T. Cameron, of Porontawhoa. Tin* business part of the evening being thus concluded, dancing and boating were again indulged in, and kept up until midnight, when the gathering dispersed, haviiiig spent a most enjoyable evening. .Mrs "Wilson, of the " Elite Tea Rooms," and her staff, provided excellent refreshments. During the evening Mr R. li. Anderson (the club's piper) provided very effective music on the bagpipes, being stationed on Mr H. B. France's sailing . boat. The special thanks of tlic club are duo Mrs 0. S. Keedwell for the gift of the handsome oilpainting, and to those members of the committee, who th£ir time and labour, also to those two lady members of the club who were so highly successful in tlio sail© of tiokete.
