A Dairyman's Duty.

The fact that there are a. great many cows which will yidld from two to three pounds of buttor-fat daily should form a .strong incentive to •ajiy dairymen who wishes ito improve his herd, to feed hiis cows in such a way as to secure them from the highest production of which they are capable, and als'o to try to gradually raise the standard of. production of the herd by a judicious weed-ing-out of low producers and by adding to the herd, as opportunity offers, cows or. heifers that give promise of 'becoming large producers. It should be remembered that the bull is at least "half the dairy 'herd" according to the testimony of good authorities, and till© best pure-bred bull that the farmea , ca.n afford should be placed attheJiead of the herd. Every dairy farmer owes it to himself and to bis family to do the best he can with the cows flie has. and he does not know whether'his cows can do .bettor than they are now doing until he experiments a little, giving them some irew nalatable grain food, or a little more of t!:ic feeds they are getting, and watching the results of the milk reecrl sheet. This involves individual feeding of cows and regular w:-'irhin.cr of the milk with occasional testing of this for butter-fat,.but this is the only way to know how the account stands with' each tiow, and whether these are doing -as well as thp-v ought to, and will tiro, winder the right system of feeding and mainsrpme'it.— V. }Y. Woll, Wisconsin Ex. Station.
