LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL
A mooting of the Levin Borough Council was hold last evening at the Council Chambers, Oxford street. Levin. The Mayor (.Mr B. It. Gardener), presided, ami the following members were present:-- Councillors Mackenzie. Lancaster, Areus, flaiiiKin. Matho.son, Franco, Prou.se, Palnior and Blonkhorn. HATS AS I'LAGCK DISSF/MTNATORS. A lott<»r was j-ead from the Department of Pu'blic Health enclosing a copy of the regulations for the prevention or checking of the spread of plague by tlie; extermination of rats, which were the active disseminators of tlii.s dangerous infectious disease. The Acting District Health ■oflii-er, in the course of his letter, recommended that immediate effect be- given to the regulations and every of Font made to carry them out in their entirety within the district under the council's control, special attention being given to grocers' stores, .butchers' shops, restaurants, and other places where articles of food were kept, as woll as private house* and places of business generally. For ordinary .households the cat had been found a most effective aid. in reducing the number of therodents. Poisoning and trapping must be practised to an extensive sea!: , , and all rats so disposed of should lie immediately buried, or, preferably, burnt. On the motion of the Mayor the letter was referred to the Sanitation Committee. ONFOHI) STREET IMPROVEMENTS. Cr. Mackenzie moved : That the. council push on the blinding of Oxford street, especially bc-tween the railway station and the Levin Post Office, witfli nil haste. Or. Franco seconded the motion, which was agreed to. A TRANSFER. On the motion of Or. Hannan, seconded by Or. Mackenzie the following motion was agreed to: That the. application of Thos. James for -a transfer <of Those. Xorth's section in Oxford street bo granted, subject to the scrutiny of the 'borough solicitor and his approval. HKTTKII L.VI K THAN NEVER. Cr. France moved: That no new business be taken after 10.30. Cr. Matheson seconded Or. Franco-: We ought not to sweat the reporter too much. (Hear, hear!) Tlio motion was adopted-. A MISINFORMED PUBLIC. Cr. Lancaster asked what the nuetal cost for crushing per yard. Tlio Town Clerk: About 3s od. Cr. France: A ratepayer has said that it cost 11s 6d. Mr Hook: He was a long way off. Cr. Lancaster: T had .-heard Various complaints and that is why I raised the question. Tt was eventually stated that the cost was 3s \\(] per yard. LOCAL AND OTHERWISE.
