WAIROA.

OBBOM OUB OWN COBBEBPONDENT. ] August 20, 8 p.m. The two shocks of an earthquake were felt Here about the same time as at Napier. Great indignation is felt by all the residents here consequent upon the t.a.s. Waipara haring arrived to take away the colonial forces. In fact, so strong is public feeling upon this matter, and to the supposed causes which led to such a disastrous defeat in the late engagement with the exprisoners at Ruaki Ture, that a public indignation meeting will be held, and is convened for Thursday next. ' Things are likely to come to a pretty pass here if left ■without protection where the population is so scattered. I have-just been credibly informed that about twenty of the up-river natives have this day started to join the ex-prisoners, and it would appear to be a well-known fact that they are receiving reinforoements from other parts. The steamer arrived at 7-30 this morning. A number of the colonial forces will have to proceed overland, as the Waipara cannot’, it is said, convey the whole of them. The schooner Hero is still in the river, awaiting an opportunity to ’depart, „ and is full of passengers. We have had.a great* deal' of rain here lately, and at present little promise of a change in the weather.

August 21, 9 a.m.

There is a vague rumor afloat of a body of Hauhaus being in our immediate vicinity. The constabulary force was relanded, and took up their original stations.
