Hukarere School

BISHOPS ADDRESS

Shield to be Added to School Trophies

MAORI HISTORY Using one definition of the word "Hukarere”—pure and white—the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, exhorted the girls ’of the Hukarere School, Napier, to live up to that definition when he presented them with their prizes at the breaking-up ceremony yesterday afternoon. He likened the girls to arrows, propelled by the giant hand of the Maori race, and carried the simile further by urging them to remember that without the three feathers of Hope, Faith and Charity the arrows would not travel straight. Proceedings at the ceremony were opened by the Bishop of Waiapu, the Rt. Rev. H. Williams, who spoke briefly before inviting the principal, Miss Hall, to read her annual report. The school year was briefly revised from the viewpoints of work and sport, and all the friends who had assisted the

school were thanked for their services.

Bishop Bennett announced his intention of presenting a shield to the school for annual competition in articles on local Maori history. The shield, he said, would be composed of about a dozen native woods, and the object of the competition was to provide a permanent record of the folk lore, legends and history of the Maori race.
