BRIGHTER TENNIS
Hit-thew Lot Swede
(Own Correspondent—by Air Mail) LONDON, Oct. 13, A brilliant lawn tennis star of the first magnitude appeared yesterday at Queen’s Club—Karl Schroder, Swedish champion, sent, with King Gustav’s approving smile resting on him, to bring, if possible, the British Covered Courts National trophy home to Stockholm, writes Ulyss Rogers in the “Daily Express.” This, is not the first time this tall, fair-haired younq giant of 22 has played in a big British championship. During the first afternoon’s play at Wimbledon two years ago there was great excitement among a’ group of foreign visitors who wanted tp see Schroder. Now he is here again. And what has he done on the Continent in between times. He has beaten the German aco, Von Cramm, Von Cramm broke two rackets taking the Swede’s cannon ball service. He has also beaten Von Gramm’s understudy, Henkel, twice beaten Jean Borotra, and Christian Boussus. In America he has not had such signal successes, Wood is his- surface. He finds himself this week on wood in a turmoil of international talent that includes Borotra and H. W. Austin, and a crowd of ambitious young hopes, Destremau, Hare, Buller, Shayes, Shaffi, C. M. Jones and Wilde. He played yesterday a slim young left-hander, whose calling is in the shipping world. A fine trier, but he' was never more at sea than when Schroder banged over his rubber lightning, rushed to the net, and using his racket with as much ease as most folk could wield a wooden jam spoon, smashed and slashed and chopped with deadliest accuracy everything that came anywhere near him. He regretted to let balls sail out—smote them, and smote them hard anyway. This young fellow is all tor brighter tennis, and as much to the square minute as possible. He romped home 6—l, 6—2, 6 —l.
