Hastings Competition Matches
Several remarkably fine bowling averages and a fine batting innings of 98 by A. Mahoney were features of the third series of one-day matches played in the Hastings Cricket Sub-Associa-tion’s mid-week competition at Nelson Park yesterday afternoon. United scored an easy outright win by an innings and 103 runs over Methodist, and West End collected a threepoint win over Heretaunga by 29 runs on the first innings. Brief details of the two games are as follow:—
West End v. Heretaunga.—Batting first, Heretaunga compiled 94, Giorgi contributing 61 and Rouse 12. Tho, bowling honours were gained by Halligan and Rosenberg, who each took five wickets, for 32 and 40 runs respectively. In reply West End made 123, Halligan scoring 31, Martin 22, Orr 20, Wilcock 16 and Boyle 11; and Tacon took four wickets for 24 runs and Rouse three for 50. In their second innings Heretaupga lost two wickets for 46 runs, Mitchell being 19 not out and Kale 15. United v. Methodist. — The latter were quickly dismissed for 41, Gosnell 11 and Youngo 10 being the only double-figure scorers. Dunn took five wickets for 11 runs and Mitchell five for 29. United declared their first innings closed al 161 for seven wickets, Mahoney heading the list with 98 and Swallow 28, and Mitchell 23 being next in order. Wilkins took five wickets let 83 runs. A real “rot” set in when Methodist went in a second time, and they were dismissed for 17 runs, Dann taking four wickets for five runs and Mitchell four for seven.
