For the first time since the present swimming season opened in earnest, the red danger flags were flown from the Napier Municipal Baths yesterday, warning bathers that the surf was dangerous for swimming. A brisk breeze was blowing, and three long lines of breakers were continually falling on the beach, with a sharp rip back. During the morning no bathers used the beach, but a few were noticed in the lunch hour, apparently secure in their swimming prowess. It was noticeable, however, that they did not stay long in the surf, contenting themselves with a brief splash.

The first stage of the beauty competition for the discovery of Miss Hastings in the Hawke’s Bay Bathing Belle contest was productive of great public interest at the Municipal Theatre on Saturday evening last, when Miss Ruth Connop, representing the Hakwe’s Bay Boxing Association, won spontaneous popular approval for her graceful bearing. Accompanied by her maids, and wearing costumes specially selected at Westerman’s, Hastings, she was the centre of attraction in a very delightful display.*
