Progress of “Miss Hastings” Contest BOXING IN THE LEAD The positions of the queen canditates in the competition for the election of “Miss Hastings” at noon to-day were: (1) Boxing (red), Miss Ruth C’onnop. (2) Citizens’ Band (yellow), Miss Molly Jefferd. (3) Tennis Clubs (blue), Miss Rae Sanders.

(4) Sports Clubs (green), Miss Zoe Fryer. • The flags on the clock tower showing the positions of the candidates were flown for .the first time to-day. The order will be changed each day according to the votes recorded by the respective candidates. The demand for art union tickets has already exceeded all expectations. The tickets are threepence each and the prize is £5O. Those purchasing art union tickets should retain them until after the draw, which takes place during January, 1937. Votes for the respective candidates are being recorded at the rate of one vote for every penny handed into the secretary of the Progress League. The committees are working vigorously organising functions to raise money for their respective candidates. These functions will be advertised daily on the back page of this paper.

SPORTS QUEEN The Heretaunga Swimming and Life Saving Club has chosen Friday, night next to open its activities in aid: of the combined Sports Queen. A first class programme is being presented. Mr.G. A. Maddison, the club’s patron, Will officially open the season and introduce the Sports Queen to the public. A special parade of eight prospective bathing belles has been arranged .as the result of protests regarding the selection of the Sports Queen. The audience will be asked to express its opinion as to the most suitable candidate. There will be a full and interesting programme at the usual prices and the club anticipates a record attendance,

TENNIS CLUBS’ QUEEN The Parkvale Tennis Club has arranged for a special mixed doubles Yankee tournament during the weekend, for the benefit of the Combined Tennis Clubs’ Queen, Miss Rae Sanders. Play’ will commence at 10 a.m. and morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Those entering the tournament are asked to arrange for their own partners, although partners will be available for those who have not made their own arrangements. An excellent day’s sport is promised to all tennis enthusiasts and it is expected that members of all tennis clubs will attend. The Parkvale Tennis Club request that all those competing will provide their own equipment.

BOXING QUEEN / The Boxing Association took the opportunity of introducing its queen, Miss Ruth Connop, to the public of Waipukurau during a recent boxing tournament. Miss Connop was received with tremendous enthusiasm and the committee acquired a considerable number of votes as the result. Miss Connop will be introduced to the boxing public of Hastings to-night at the Municipal Theatre on the occasion of the bout between Joe Hall and Neville Mudgway. The association’s committee is preparing a most comprehensive series of functions in aid of its candidate. Further announcements will be made shortly.

CITIZENS’ BAND QUEEN Miss Molly Jefferd, the candidate of the Hastings Citizens’ Band { has been absent in Christchurch during the week, but she is expected back shortly. The members of the band have lost no time in commencing their campaign and on Saturday last paraded in Heretaunga street. Business in art union tickets was brisk and enabled the candidate to take second place in the competition. Among many other functions which will be staged at a later date, the committee has decided to run a dance in the band room every Tuesday night until the election closes.
