AMERICAN NAVY

European Squadron To Be Re-created 'WASHINGTON, Sept. 16. Due to the Spanish situation and disturbed European conditions generally, the Navy Department was to-day instructed by the Department of State to re create the European Squadron after a lapse of seven years. The cruiser Raleigh (7500 tons) will be Rear-Admiral Fairfield’s flagship, replacing the Quincy. Other units will be the destroyers Kamo and Hatfield and the coastguard cutter Cayuga. All are now operating near Spain. The fleet’s mission will be to protect Americans in emergencies and to display the American flag in European ports.
