ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

Commercial England Doing Well BUSINESS GENERALLY GOOD Economic conditions in Great Britain at the present time are good, according to the observations of Mr H." M. Campbell, of Poukawa. who has just returned from a visit to that country. There was, however, just one doubt in his mind as to whether the improvement was genuine or whether it was the unfortunate rush which had taken place for armaments and defence purposes generally that had given rise to false optimism in regard to employment and spending generally.

“As things are now,” said Mr Campbell, “all the factories are working, orders are being held up on account of the rush of business, the whole of the textile business appears to be going at top and prices are good for raw materials; in fact, as far as one can possibly tell, the whole cf commercial England is doing well.”

Ships, he said, were leaving England quite well loaded and with no suggestion of ballast, which pointed to the fact that the dominions and other countries were purchasing good supplies of English goods. That in turn permitted the British workman and his employer to purchase New Zealand goods, which must have a really good effect upon us in this country.
