QUEEN’S SQUARE
Improvements Made by the Council
SOME HOOLIGANISM
“A ratepayer extended to mo his congratulations to the council on the work done at Queen’s Square,” said Cr. P. Loach at the meeting of tho Hastings Borough Council last night when reference was made to the removal of the hedge round this borough reserve. “Ho dbew my attention, though, to tho fact that sone people seem to think the square is a cyclo track and use it as a short cut,” added Cr. Loach.
Cr. A. I. Rainbow suggested that notices prohibiting the riding of cycles should be erected at all entrances to the park. “There has always been a certain amount of hooliganism at this reserve,” said the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, who considered that it any transgressors were caught they should be prosecuted. Ho was of the opinion that now that the hedge had been removed it had made a big improvement to the area, which he suggested could be brightened by the planting of flowering shrubs. “I understand that somebody has been turning some of the trees into hoardings,” said Cr. Loach. Tho Mayor expressed deep concern at such action and said that the matter would be investigated immediately. The council went to no end of trouble and expense to make the town bright and attractive, he said, and it was very disheartening to find that so little appreciation was shown. He contended that prosecutions should be made of such offenders.
