SCHOOL COMMITTEES
Increased Allowances from
Department
For some time past many school eotnmittees have experienced difficulty in carrying on owing to the considerably reduced allowances that have been made. For the current year, ending March 31, 1937, the total grant will be £12,269 for the Hawke’s Bay education district, being an increase of £4280 on the amount made available last year.
At to-day’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board the department advised that it had been found possible to increase considerably the amount for incidental expenses of school committees. The amount included a special provision (10 per cent, of the total) for improvements to school grounds, and this was in addition to any work on grounds being carried out by the Public Works Department. When distributing the grant to committees the board should advise the committees accordingly. This additional amount also included any provision which any board deemed it advisable to make to meet cases of special hardship or necessity. When distributing the grant the board must therefore exercise its discretion in reserving any amount to meet such cases.
