Butchers Defeat Grocers For Ox Shield and Cup

The final of the Rugby matches between the butchers and grocers was played at the Hastings High School ground yesterday afternoon, before a large crowd of spectators, who had the thrill of their lives, as there was not a dull moment from beginning to end. When the teams lined up both sides knew they were in for a hard 80uiiuutes ’ toil. The butchers, losing the toss, started oft' against the wind, and after some very fast movements on both sides the grocers were awarded a free kick just under the post fsr Weymouth to score three easy points. Then the game started, and from a scrum at half-way the butchers’ half-back, Stan Nuttal, got the ball nicely out to A. Taylor, who went through with some clever movements to pass on to Herb Brinson, who finished the best run of tho day by scoring alongside the post. The kick went wide. From then on tho play was taken from end to end, A. Bower nearly getting over on several occasions. Lofty Rogers, MftAvenue, B. Gardiner, S. Eddie, B. Chilton, IL Smith, G. Ryan, D. Killeher and Pat Kirkman all tried hard to score. From a lino-out the grocers’ centre, Eddie, collected the ball nicely and went through for a beautiful try in the corner. The kick went amiss.

The pace at this stage was getting i faster and faster, when B. Chilton col--1 locted the ball and passed out to D. ; Taylor, who put in a brilliant run to ' pass to G. Ryan and on to M. Garvey, j who finished the movement by scoring in the corner. The kick landed short. With only a few minutes to qp both teams were all c"t to score the deeidinp try. The butchers’ half, Nuttal. intercepted the grocers’ pass, and with the last thrilling run scored in the corner, to make tho butchers tho winners of the Ox Shield and Cup, which will bo on -how in (lie various butchers’ shop' in turn
