AVONDALE TO-MORROW

Review of the Runners

(By “The Barb.’’)

The Avondale spring meeting opens on the Avondale racecourse to-morrow and will be continued on Monday. Opening day sees the Avondale Stakes, Cup and the Champion Plate decided, while on the concluding day the most important events are the Avondale Guineas and the Hack Plate. The meeting opens with the

12.0 MAIDEN PLATE, of £100; 7 furlongs (colts and geldings 8.2; mares 7.11): Gay Flier, Brilliant Acre, Thurwind, Bass, Survoy, Strathire, King Theo, Rua King, Singara, Applicant, lied Fox, Philemup, Valamito, Silver Sound, Adsum, Mainland, k'cee Advice, Lady Valva, Gay Princess, Solas, Morning Sun, Salvar, Tip Toes, Survanna

A big field, but will doubtless be somewhat reduced as there is a final payment to be made at the post. Such public form as has been shown suggests as machine favourites Mainland, Strathire and Philemup.

12.40: KINGSLAND HURDLES. Of £175; 1J mile.

Lord, Vai is reported to be schooling brilliantly, but he will need to be at, his very best with 11.2 to carry over the twelve furlongs. Emancipation has not been successful for some time. Teddy Boy won decisively at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. Merry Lap last autumn showed winning form on more than one occasion. Lucidus has gone up to 9.13 for his Wanganui win and he, with Benighted and Curlew, may prove the best of the “under ten’’ division. Most monetary support may come for Teddy Boy, Lord Vai and Lucidus.

1.22: HENDERSON HANDICAP. Of £130; 6 furlongs.

Hack conditions. Here speculators we confronted with the largest field of thS day. Scbrof when last raced proved himself a first-class hack, but he may require a race to bring him back to that form. Mungacre is another good hack and has filled a minor place in an open sprint. Fleetwiud is galloping most attractively, while Johnny Walls won at the Pakuranga meeting. Landlubber is fair, but likes it soft. Gay Hunter last season was a fair two-year-old. Surella has gone up to 8.4 for his easy win last Saturday at Wanganui and may in preference stall m the Champion Hack Plate. Those weighted on the minimum hardly appeal on such form as they have shown. The best backed may include Surella, Fleetwind and Mungacre.

2.8: AVONDALE CUP. Of £500; 11 mile.

Jonathan will hardly be ready to carry 10.0 successfully over ton furlongs, unless, of course, his two races at Wanganui have benefited him more than expected. Master Brierly is up to w.f.a. form when right, but he too may not be quite ready yet. Red Manfred is said to haw come on well with his Wanganui starts and there, on the second -jay. was seen putt ng in a great run over the final furlong. Velocipede is at his best over this distance and at lOlbs. above the minimum will appeal to many. Scotland gained an easy win in his last start, but the company was not as classy as this. Tybalt was second over a short course at Ellerslie last month and since has done very well in his training. Mazir last season was up to the best class over middle distances and now must be treated with respect. Tradesman has a chance, but not a big one. Auckland reports suggest that Lord Vai may prefer this event to the hurdles and, in that case, cannot be lightly dismissed. Lagoon, at 31bs. above the minimum, is another that looks tempting. Gay Hose is small and at a disadvantage in n, big field. Horowheniia let his party down badly at the Pakuranga meeting. For his Wanganui win Silver Brier has been penalised 61b. Con Fuoco .stands out among the others. It is not easy to say what will carry more money than Tybalt, Mazir and Red Manfred.

2.50 AVONDALE STAKES, of £300; 4 furlongs (colts and geldings. Bst., mares 7.9): Carrington Hall, Sigurd, The Crooner, Raceline, Bachelor King, British Nation, Bowyang, Harlech, Royal Bachelor, Manatere, Love Parade, Elanage, Whakao, Aiwai, Feldberg, Bluffer, Airam, Greenwich, Penzance, Girl Pat, Tririri.

Only a few of these youngsters have had the benefit of a race. Har’ech and Bowyang will be bracketed, being owned by Mr and Mrs A. D. Potter respectively. The favourite may come from Sigurd (second at Wanganui), the Harlech-BOwy a ng bracket and Love Parade.

3.33 CHAMPION PLATE, of £300; 7 furlongs (3-year-olds Bst; 4-year-olds up 8.9: maiden 3-year-olds 71b.; 4-year olds and up lOlbs.).—Sweet Rose, Lorn

acre, Queen Nona, Debham, Fleetwind, Mandamus, Surella, May Song, Karl, Gay Streak, Singara, Gay Papa, Bold Blood, Rollickor, Anion.

Karl’s win at Wanganui will have put him out of hack class. Lornaere is a good hack but lacks racing condition. Queen Nona is no more than useful. I'leetwind, if reserved for this event, will find solid support, the -same applying to Surella, who is one of the most promising hacks in the Auckland district. Mandamus won well in the Trial Plate at Wanganui and is held in high esteem by trainer F. W. Davis. Of the others Anion, Gay Streak, and May Song may prove the best. The best backed may be Surella, Mandamus and Anion,

4.15: FLYING HANDICAP. Of £250; 6 furlongs.

Galilee is a brilliant galloper and with but 8.10 must command respect. Royal Dance is another fast sprinter. Bulking 1-und is useful, but not up to the best class. Royal Secret has been withdrawn. Prince Acre is iu winning form. Gallio will have to win to rehabilitate himself after those two inglorious Wanganui displays. Rerepai is making a reappearance and at present may require a race or two to bring him back to 1934-35 form. Golden Sheila won the Champague Stakes at Ellerslie last autumn, but, now handicapped at 21bs. above w.f.a., has her share of weight. Still, she is reported to be in forward condition. Puss Moth must appeal at only 51bs. above the minimum. Tooley Street was second at the Pakuranga fixture, his latest effort. Of the others Tray Bit and Golden Blonde should not lack some backing, most of which, however, may be forthcoming for Puss Moth, Golden Sheila and Golden Blonde.

5.0: SWANSON HANDICAP. Of £140; one mile.

Valrent is considered fhe making of a good handicap horse for this season, but at 9.6 will need to be at his best. Teddy Boy may prefer the hurdles. Pennycoruequick is a useful lit fe fillyThere is very little public form on which to judge the rest, but glowing reports are to be read anont Gay Talkie. This the last event may see most rung up on Gay Talkie, Pennycomequick and Sergia.
