ANOTHER DELAY
Gisborne Aerodrome Licence
A month’s postponement of the date on which East Coast Airways will recommence their service between Napier and Gisborne has followed the visit to Darton Field, the Gisborne landing ground, of the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department in Wellington. Although it had been hoped that the service could be resumed on October 1, the report of the en gineer upon the condition of tho runways stated that the field would not be in condition for flying until tho end of October.
The licence of Darton Field was sus pended some time ago to enable extensive levelling work to be done, and this work is now nearing completion. Giving to the exceptionally dry winter in tho Gisborne district, however, the grass on the field, and in particular on the main runway, has not taken as well as might have been expected, and for this reason tho ground is not yet sufficiently consolidated to allow its use.
The flying has been now put off for a month, the service should still bo in operation for the beginning of the East Coast summer tourist traffic, and it is stated that the planes and staff can quickly be called upon the resume the service, but a fortnight’s notice is no cessary.
