NAPIER BAND

Instruments Still in Good Condition

QUARTERLY REPORT

Appreciation of the action of the officers of tlie Hawke’s Bay Regiment in providing their new uniforms is expressed by the Napier Citizens’ Band in its quarterly report, received by the Napier Borough Council evening. The band now has 31 members, seven of whom are boys, who are making good progress. After seven years of use, the instruments arc showing little signs of wear. The full report reads as follows:— “During the last four months the members of the Napier Citizens’ Band have been carrying on with their weekly practices. This period is always marked by the average attendance falling off. It is hoped to have heating arrangements placed in the bandroom next winter, which will induce members to attend practice during the winter.

“Since April the band has given four Sunday concerts, as follow:—Hospital one, Sound Shell one, Port Ahuriri one, Old People’s Home one. Parades for the Pirate football jubilee, representative football match on the

King’s Birthday, and Auzac Day services. Other concerts arranged had to be cancelled owing to the unsuitable weather.

“It is hoped that an early start will be made with the usual concerts on the Parade.

“On the King’s Birthday the band made its first appearance in its new scarlet uniforms. They looked very smart; also, their playing and marching were highly commented upon. “My committee suggests that the officers of the First Hawke’s Bay Regiment be thanked by His Worship the Mayor for providing the Napier band with such,a fine uniform.

“Under the training of the conductor seven boys have made steady progress and have now been added to the band’s strength, making the band’s membership up to 31 players.

“An inspection of the instruments on June 23 by Drum-Major Woods and Sergeant Steele proved that the instruments show little sign of wear after nearly seven years’ use.’*
