A GAY EVENING
Mahora School Fancy Dress Ball LARGE CROWD PRESENT Last evening the pupils of Mahora School enjoyed tho jolliest night of the year when their annual school fancy dress ball was held in the Hastings Assembly Hall, and indeed, many parents spent a most pleasurable evening also, watching the splendid efforts of tho children. The ball opened with the Grand March, which was taken iu two divisions; first, the preparatory classes ami Standard 1., numbering 190 pupils, and second, Standards IL to VI., with 239 children. The children’s fancy costumes were a delight to see and made the scene oue cf the gayest possible. The senior grand march was heralded by Gwen Bayly, Mary Brooking, Leta Brinson, Dons Sutcliffe, Erank Peach, Jim Simonsen, Duucan Hyde and John Bremner, bearing Chinese lanterns and carrying the school banner in front, who marched from the top end of the hall to tho stage end, wheeled and joined tho main body of children led by Noelino Milne and Brian Bridge at the lower eud. As a grand finale the children formed au arch of flags and marched through. Folk dances followed the marching. The infants’ items splendidly given, gave proof of much excellent training by tho infant mistress, Miss Satchell, and the Misses PownalJ, Gilmore, Hay and Hill, and Mr M. Beuth. The items were; The Keel Row, Nursery Romp, Will You Please Be My Partner, Tue Mulberry Bush and Sir Boger.
The senior folk duuces, which were also danced with real delight by the pupils, were directed by Mr Priestly, assisted by the Misses Donnelly, Oxenham, Suu in, Epps, Mrs Macdonell, anu Mr Hepburn. xne dances given were: Tupping Dunce, Skaters, clap Dance, Buity Tufty, Christchurch Bells, Sir Koger, Bellinger’s Bound, Gathering Peascods If All the World were Paper, Bam Dance with Toe Pointing, Leap the Elax, The Cats’ Parade.
The general supervision for the pupils’ display was iu the hands of the Headmaster, Mr E. Bissell.
During the evening, Mr C. Lassen, chairman of the Mahora School committee, iu the absence of the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, congratulated the children on their splendid display oi dancing and the school staff on the excellence of their training. At the conclusion of the dancing programme the children enjoyed a delicious supper of numerous tempting delicacies, the supper-room being decorated in black and old gold, the school colours.
