Suggestion for Waitomo Illumination of the Waitomo Caves by a system of flood-lighting on the principle adopted at the Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales was advocated by Dr. W. F. Buist, who returned to Hawera on Tuesday alter a tour of New South Wales. “Iho 10 Jenolan Caves aro grand and extensive hut I do not think they have anything better than the caves a’t Waitomo,” said Dr. Buist. who added that the Australians had made great use of a marvellous system of lighting within the caves. After careful planning flood-lights bad been placed in all the caves in such a way as to show the beauty ol the fofmatiun to its best advantage. The work of instilling an effective lighting system had been dune to perfection. The beauty and grandeur of Waitomo Caves could be enhanced by the installation of such a scheme. “I would like to warn people who are contemplating a visit to the Jenolan Caves that they are in for a strenuous time,” said Dr. Buist. In the Orient Cave alone there were 1600 steps to go down, besides Hire? almost perpendicular ladders. A complete tour of the Orient Cave occupied two and a-hali hours. People who had visited the Blue Mountains were often asked whether they were correctly named, said Dr. Buist The mountains were unsurpassed in grandeur and beauty and when seen on a perfect day, as he had seen them, there was a definite blue haze
