BRIDGE APPROACHES

Structures at Waitangi BOARD TO DO WORK The approaches to the new Whakutu railway bridge and the northern approach to the new Washout bridge are to be constructed by the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board. This arrangement was decided upon at a recent conference between the chairman of the board Mr 0. Lassen, and the engineer, Mr G. Rochfort, with tho district engineer and the designing engineer of railways. At to-day’s meeting of the board, Mr Lassen reported that the department required the work to be carried out immediately, in order that the heavy steel girders for the construction of both bridges could be transported to the bridge sites. The work at the Whakatu bidgo would be done at 1/(1 a yard, and it would bo credited to the Ngaruroro river scheme. As the board owed the department £4OOO the sum involved would be an offset for the present time. The work at the washout bridge approach would bo done at 2/3 a yard. The chairman’s action in entering into these arrangements with the department was endorsed by the board. It was agreed that a number of teams should be employed on these works as soon as possible.
