TEMPORARY PREMISES

Eighteen Permits in Force CAUSING COUNCIL TROUBLE Of 208 temporary-building permits issued after the earthquake, only 18 now remain in force, said the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison, at yesterday’s Rotary Club luncheon. Those 18, however, were giving the Borough Council some trouble. They fell into two categories, added Mr. Maddison. The first category consisted of those owners who still had temporary buildings erected for urgent replacement of buildings destroyed by the earthquake, and in the other category were those property-owners who had erected buildings for speculative purposes. Those temporary buildings were now in unfair rental competition with the permanent buildings erected by other citizens, and were a decided fire-hazard. Tho way in which the people of the town had set about erecting permanent buildings to replace those destroyed or damaged in the earthquake was most commendable, said Mr. Maddison, and was indicative of a very lino civic spirit. It could now be said that Hastings was fully restored, and in a more stable and sound measure.
