GALE AT PALMERSTON

Shortly before 6 o 'clock this evening, ono of the wildest storms experiencen in Palmerston North since last Fetiruary broke over the city. A high westerly wind sprang up, reaching gale force at times and driving rain like elect'before it. Heavy rain poured down, thrashing shrubs and trees and driving against windows -nd buildings with terrific force. Two business promises and several house windows were blown in, but not a great deal of major damage has occurred. , Very heavy rain showers fell on the Foxton road in the vicinity of “The Drain,” and motorists are advised to take great care when travelling over this highway. Late to-night water waover the road to a depth of twa er three inches in places. Many acre* of land on both sides of this stretch of road are under about a foot of water. Minor washouts have occurred in place - off the roads, but it was still passable late to-night,
