PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 2
G Men Allege Vast Tax Evasion ARREST IN AMERICA Dy Telegraph-—Press Assn—Copyright. WASHINGTON, April 22. Something of a re-shuffle in ILc ranks of public enemies occuned today with the arrest of John Torrio in New York. He had once been, America's Public Enemy No. 1, til] Al Capone superseded him.
Even as Public Enemy No. 2 it appeared likely that he would disappear from the scene, for a time at leait. when the Government alleged that as one of the principals fj a “bootleg” syndicate he had cheated the Government of a million dollars by fixing Internal Revenae stamps on bottles containing mixtures of taxed and illicit liquors.
The Department of Justice further announced that Alvin Karpis, coted kidnapper and now America's Public Enemy No. 1, was wanted in connection with the abduction of Edward Bremer, who was released after a ransom of 200,000 dollars was paid. The department offered a reward of 5000 dollars for his capture. That Congress is as enthusiastic over the so-called “G” men as is the public was made clear to-day when the donate overwhelmingly declined lo accept a reduction of 225,000 dollars purposed in the appropriations for that bureau in the Department of Justice. The appropriation for the oureau totalled 6,025,000 dollars.
