“TO ANZAC—THE DEAD & THE BEREAVED —1936”
O’er half a world, when beat of war drums rent The peace of earth, clear came their "Adsuin” cry, And leaving home and loved ones, swift they, went Unflincning forth to battle and to die. They faltered not, though ruthless Death did wait Their glorious charge o’er Gallipoli’s steep sward, They recked it not that foemen numbered great And certain Death was Duty’s sole reward. Flinchless they faced the foe, and fearless iought For Honour, Truth, their Freedom and their Race, To Death’s cruel challenge mocking gave retort, And laughing flung the gauntlet in his face. Brave sons of far-famed Anzac sleeping ’Neath hallowed sod in that far, foreign shore, We who are left, while years are slowly creeping, Revere thy cherished memory evermore. Now, once again the Bells of Memory pealing, Remembrance stirs and brings its meed of praise For glorious deeds and on the ear come stealing Thanksgiving Hymns which fervent voices raise. And ye, bereaved, who still shed anguished tears, For friend or husband, father, brother, son, Let glory now transcend the grief of years Ween not nor stir their rest so hardly won: Weep not nor mourn, endure a further space: sapping grief thy tcardimmed vision mars, Lo, there thy loved ones wait with radiant face To welcome thee, with joy, beyond the stars!
