PET EXPRESSIONS
“How’m I Doin’?” Ann Harding’s pet expression Is “Oh, it’s so beautiful!” with a dreamy look in her eyes and the accent on “so.” Do you remember that scene in “Biography of a Bachelor Girl” with Robert Montgomery, in which they stood looking at an exquisite scene of towering mountains, pine-dan and crisply etched against the sky? It wasn’t in the script, but Ann simply had to say what she felt. Jean Harlow often says: “How’m 1 doin’?” It was the important tag line of “Blonde Bombshell.” When s'j“ muffs a line on the set, Jean will often vexedly murmur under her breath“How’m I doin’?” and she usually gets a laugh.
The arch look and lift of the eye brows which accompany Robert Montgomery’s, “Well, I don’t know’’ has found its way into many of his films. Chatting with Bob over a noggin of ale, discussing some topic, he will suddenly say, with the same inflection, “Well, 1 don’t know—what do you think?” And though the conversation may have been quite serious, ytui’ie compelled to laugh.
