NAPIER PARADE

Work oft Memorial Arch Started

Added beauty to the Marine Parade, Napier, will shortly be given by the erection of the Harold Latham Memorial Arch, which is to form an entrance to the auditorium in front of the sound-shell stage. A contract to build this arch has been let to Wm. Angus, Ltd., and the work was started yesterday J he cost of tho arch is to be met by personal contributions from members Uf the executive Of ins Napier Thilty Thousand Club and by donations from friends of the lath Mr Harold Latham. Planned on classic design, to lone in with the architecture uJ the Manne Parade colonnade, this memorial inch will be a beautiful memorial to a mte citizen ot Napier whose deatn was mourned by many. It will be an enhance to the auditorium on the Parade, directly at the top end of Emerson street. From lower Emerson street, indeed, it will stand out in bold relief agaihSt the skyline a beautifully designed monument. It is tu be built of reinforced concrete. The arch proper will consist of a semi-circular bow superimposed upon concrete pillars. Across the capping of the arch there will be in large letleis tho words: “Harold Latham Arch’’. Immediately above this, there will be more concrete capping, with this inscription in largo lettering: ‘'Without vision, the people perish. ' This inscription is a particularly apt cue, because the late Mr Harold Latham Was a man of great vision, especially iu regard to the Marine Parade and its potentialities. When he first came to Napier, more than 30 years ago, the site of this memorial arch was nothing but untidy backyard area. Today, it is the centre of Napier’s most beautiful reserve. There is to be a short colonnade on each side of the arch proper, and on each of four pillars electric inmps Will be installed, toning in with the general lighting scheme on tho Parade. Tho concrete-work is to be plastered in colour, and the whole memorial will become part and parcel of the existing architecture on the foreshore
