CROQUET WIND-UP

Hawke’s Bay Association

The lawns of the United Croquet Club in Nelson Park, Napier, presented an animated appearance yesterday afternoon when the official closing oi the Hawke’s Bay Croquet Association ■was held. The closing place for play is drawn each season and I/nited Club had the honour of being hostesses to the other clubs. Various competitions were held during the afternoon in brilliant sunshine and members of United Club provided a very dainty tea, served in the pavilion, which was gay with vases of Mexican sunflowers and autumn-tinted chrysanthemums. Members also donated the trophies for the afternoon’s competitions. At the close of play Mrs R. A. Bayliffe, president of the United Club, said she was pleased to have the final day on the United green and was glad also to see so many players present from Hastings. In conclusion, she expressed the hope that all had enjoyed themselves.

Close on 100 players were present. The competitions resulted as follow: — Skittles: Mrs Angove 1, Mrs Courtenay 2. Trail: Mrs Tierney 1, Mrs Flowers 2. Angles: Mrs Fenwick 1, Mrs Esson 2. Golf croquet: Mrs Aislabie 1, Mrs Sigley 2. Ball break: Mrs Esson 1, Mrs Tierney 2. Mrs C. P. Hopkins, Hastings, president of the H.B. Croquet Association, spoke next and expressed pleasure at the very successful closing day. She congratulated all clubs who had entered into inter-club croquet during the season and said how much all had enjoyed it. She would like to see more clubs enter for the A grade. Amidst applause she presented pennants for inter-club events as follow: — A Grade, Hastings Club; B grade, Hastings Club; C grade, Kia Toa Club, Hastings. The Watkins Shield was won by the Hastings Club, and with pennants, was received by the captain, Mrs Watkins. Association buttons were presented as follow: —A grade, Miss Carrington (Hastings), B grade, Mrs Courtney (Port Club); C grade, Mrs Ferguson (Havelock North). Mrs Hopkins presented to Mr H. P. Stratton, of Hastings, the gold medal for Dominion championship singles, re. marking that in a letter from the New

Zealand Croquet Council congratulations were extended to the Hawke’s Bay district and the Hastings club on having such a distinguished player. In conclusion, the association president extended thanks to the United Club for giving them such a delightful afternoon.

Fulford, Tierney, Kilpatrick, Faulknor; Misses Lydford (2), all of Napier Club. Mesdames Lockwood, MeLeay, H. E. Smith, Mangelson, Kennedy, Courtenay, Poppelwell, Pools, R. L. Gray and Foreman, all oi Port Club. Mesdames F. R. Lee, T. Rowe, M. Burt, Angove, Aislabie, Alec. Sinclair, J. Ritchie, S. Wood, all of Wairere Club. Mesdames Ellis and Wiseman, of Taradale. Visitors: Mesdames Kirkham (Eskdale), Thopmson (Hastings), Chapman (Wanganui), Harris (Christchurch) and Miss Faulknor.

The results of inter-club play during the 1935-36 season were as follow:—

A grade,—Hastings 199, United 80. B grade.—Hastings 1293, Pioneer 1282, United 1175, Napier 1161, Port Club 1148, Havelock 1146, Wairere 1017, Kia Toa 1001. C grade.—Kia Toa 822, Pioneer 728, Havelock 745, Heretaunga 625, Hastings 592, Napier 455. The two last-inentioned clubs did not, owing to the weather, complete their match.
