EAT MORE VEGETABLES

Certain vegetables have long been given popular recognition as curative agents. Even before dietetics became a science or the vitamin theory was given publicity, garlic was urged in the cases of whooping-cough, tomatoes for cholera infantum, and pepper tea for scarlet fever. These old home-made remedies, descended to us through ages of reliance on the "herb doctor,’’ have the support of at least one large group of doctors. The following list gives the properties available from different crops:— Asparagus: Gently stimulates the kidneys. Carrot: For kidney complaint; used for poultices, promotes secretion of kidneys. Celery: Good for rheumatism and and neuralgia. Cucumbers: For clear complexion. Garlic: For whooping-cough, stomach and intestinal trouble.

Horse radish: Tonic for digestion; promotes secretion of kidneys, syrup cures hoarseness; tea said to benefit neuralgia and rheumatism. Leek: As poultice in bronchitis and chronic coughs; taken for whoopingcough and stomach trouble. Onion: Promotes digestion; acts on liver. Cure for constipation; taken for whooping-cough, and stomach trouble. Parsley: Lotion is good as skin beautifier. Rhubarb: A purgative and laxative. Spinach: A skin beautifier. Strawberries: Lotion used as a skin beautifier. Tomato: Cure for cholera infantum; now used instead of orange juice by some physicians for infants. Sliced tomato rubbed on skin is good for freckles and sunburn. Water melon: Clears the skin. We do not vouch for any of them any more than for the drugs and ointments that are part of the medical man’s outfit. But experience has taught generations of those who have used vegetables as health foods, and has convinced many doctors that Nature manufactures her own cures and presents them to us in various vegetable foods in a very pure form, all we have to do is to eat them.
