EUROPEAN MUSIC

B.M.S. Recital-Lecture ENGROSSING ENTERTAINMENT Au engrossingly interesting and entertaining lecture and recital dealing with various types of European national music was given by Mr. H. Temple White and Miss Myra Sawyer under the auspices of the Hastings branch of the British Music Society last evening. The audience, which number about 120, was probably the largest that there has bee;, at any of the society’s concerts, and was quite obviously delight--ed with the entertainment given by these two extraordinarily talented artists.

Mr. Temple White, with fine eloquence and vividness of expression, ex. plained the particular characteristics of each type of music afterwards played by him and sung by Miss Sawyer, and both artists showed themselves to be possessed of remarkable dramatic power. Mr. White and Alias Sawyer, both of whom are very prominent members of the musical world in Wellington, are doing a splendid work in musical education, and without any show of pedantry they are able to interest and entertain not only those people with musical education, but also those who love music and wish to know and understand more about it.

The audience last evening was highly enthusiastic, and spent one of the most delightful evenings that Hie society has yet had. Mr. White’s playing, and Miss Sawyer’s exquisite singing and poetic sense, made the entertainment memorable to everyone present, and the artists were loudly applauded for their performances.

The lecture was followed by a recital of Austrian, German, Hungarian, Russian, Finnish, Norwegian, French, and English songs, and the composers represented 'were Schubert Schumann, Brahms, Franz Hugo Wolf. Liszt, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Rachmaninov, Sibelius. Sinding, Greig, Auber, Mallinson, and Frank Bridge.
