TOBACCO BOARD
New Body to Control the Industry MR. HUSHEER APPOINTED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 20. The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries and Commerce, announced this evening that the Governor-General has approved of the appointment of the following to be members of the Tobacco - Board constituted under the Tobacco-growing Industry Act,’ 1935. — Messrs G. Husbeer, R. B. Smith, K. Sneddon, A. H. Spratt, representing tobacco manufacturers; J. F. Black, G. W. Relat, N. Rowling, H. A. Thorne representing tobacco growers. Mr L. J. Schmitt, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, will be the Government representative and chairman of the board.
Tho legislation was passed, said the Minister, as the result of repeated requests by the industry for some legislative authority whereby tho industry could be controlled and the growing production, manufacture, sales and export could be conducted on proper businesslike lines instead of under the haphazard methods which had existed in many instances in the past. “The board,” he added, "is composed of those actively engaged in the industry, representatives of manufacturers being actually engaged in the manufacture of tobacco, and representatives of growers having been selected from the actual growers of New Zealand leaf. Mr Schmitt, chairman of the board, as head of the Department of Industries and Commerce, will keep in close touch with me in regard to tho industry and activities of the board, and I feel certain that the board will be able to perform valuable service to this mest important industry.”
