WAIPUKURAU NEWS
More Females Than Males in Borough From Our Own Correspondent WAIPUKURAU, April B._ General pleasure was expressed in Waipukurau to-day when the census figures, as appearing in to-day’s “Herald.” showing an increase of 285, was noticed. The Waipukurau borough now exceeds the 2000 mark by some 48 head of population, and the increase of 285 is regarded as very gratifying. A feature of the returns, as detailed by the census enumerator for Central Hawke’s Bay, Mr C. W. Browne, is that the number of females is now in excess of the male population. In 1926 there were 014 males and 849 females, but the position is now- reversed, with 1010 males and 1038 females. The increase in population was generally anticipated to be somewhere about the 200 mark, and marks the manner in which tho borough is progressing in common with the rich country districts surrounding the town. Shops were open until 5.30 p.m. today, as they will be closed down for the whole of the Easter period from 9 o’clock to-morrow night until Tuesday morning. A full moon last night saw sixteen girls from St. Andrew’s Senior and Intermediate Girls’ Bible Classes spend a very enjoyable time in the form of a moonlight “hike.” Under the leadership of Mrs W. 11. Hutchison and Airs 1). M. Wilson, as the respective leaders, and Miss Warren, they traversed hills at Mount Herbert, then held a campfire gathering. After a programme of songs and partaking of supper, the girls returned to their homes. Waipukurau Lodge of Independent Oddfellows was represented by a party of six officers at the half-yearly meet ing of Kia Oia Lodge. Tue ceremony was conducted by Bro. D. Turkington, P.D.G.M., of Dannevirke.
