BOWLING

THE EASTER TOURNEY Women in the Game NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“Roamer.”)

With an entry of 40 teams, tl-e Easter tourney of the Hawke’s Bay Bowling Centre promises to be interesting, and it only needs fine weather for players to have an enjoyable three days’ play. I believe that at least one Hastings team failed to send their entry in in time for the draw. They were sadly disappointed when they found' ;theh'( names missing. They apparently left it for the club secretary to do, and lie overlooked the matter. This is the fault of leaving it to the last minute. One for the Ladies. Mr T. 8. Dobson, a member of ttio Hastings Club, is on holiday in Australia, kindly sends me some cuttings from new-spapers there dealing with bowls. Ho has been doing the rounds of the greens, and is very much impressed with the standard of play shown by the ladies, who, he says, put many of the men players in tho shade. In one of the clippings it is stated that the New South Wales Women’s Association was formed by five clubs in 1929. The popularity of bowls in New South Wales has spread trom Sydney, where nearly every suburb boasts a flourishing women's club. In Queensland the game has become a recognised part of women's sport. In South Australia there are many women’s clubs, and in Victoria tie game is extremely popular. A move is now being made to form an Australian Women’s Council.
