Hastings Sub-Association Wind-Up
TROPHIES PRESENTED
The annual smoke-concert and presentation of trophies of the Hastings Cricket Sub-Association was held in the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, the president, Mr. H. Brenton-Rule, presiding over am excellent attendance of players and enthusiasts. Among those present were Messrs. E. E. Elliot and J. J. O’Brien, representing the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association, and Messrs. A. Heid and J. Aislabie, of the Hawke’s Bay Umpires’ Association. Contending that to those in control of any branch of sport was due a debt of gratitude that was not always acknowledged, Mr. 8. I. Jones, when proposing the toast “The Hastings Cricket Sub-Association,’’ declared that all too frequently the administrators received no reward apart, perhaps, from the satisfaction of knowing that their work was well dona, and often received more kicks than halfpence. “We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the old administrators as well as the present,’’ he said. Among the former he specifically mentioned the services of Messrs. J. Webb, W. Anderson and H. Watkins. “Every member will acknowledge that the association has made a very good job of its task and carried on the affairs m a mSlincr that has been quite successful,’’ he added. In reply, Mr. Brenton-Rule paid a tribute to the excellent work of the active officers of the association. “The season has been a noteworthy one because of the amalgamation or the senior grades, and this change will undoubtedly tend to improve not only the general standard of play but also the relationship between the two towns,’’ lie said. There was no room for jealousy in sport and he urged all players to do nothing that would in any ,vay jeopardise the friendly relationship of the two towns., When proposing the toast of “The Hawke's Bay Cricket Association,’" Mr. L. J. Fisher voiced the thanks and appreciation of the Hastings cricketers for the very fair and generous treatment that the major body had extended to them. “During the past IS months we have been very closely in touch with the H.B.C.A., ’’ he said, “and we have worked very w’ell in harmony.’’ Mr. Fisher paid a tribute to the fine work being done generally for cricket by the secretary, Mr. E. E. Elliot, and the chairman of the management committtee of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association, Mr. H. 11. Wyllie. Appreciation of the help given them in the matter of the combined competition was expressed by Mr. Elliot, secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association, in reply, and on behalf of his association and the players of Napier he heartily congratulated the Hastings club on winning the championship this season. Other toasts honoured were: “The Umpires,” proposed by Mr. E. W. Mitchell and replied to by Air. J. J. O’Brien; “Kindred Sports,’’ Al;". N. Fippard and Messrs. T. Geddis (Rugby), R. Hunt (hockey) and L. J. Fisher (swimming); “The Press,” by Mr. A. Alahoney; “The Groundsmen,” Air. N. Fippard; and “The Performers,” by the chairman. The presentation of trophies was made by the chairman, who congratulated the players concerned upon their performances. The cups were presented to the following:—Hastings championship, Saturday senior, Hastings (H. Lambert, captain); junior champion ship, United (A. Alahoney, captain); trophy for the most improved senior player, L. J. McCarthy (Hastings club). During the evening musical and other items of entertainment were provided by Messrs. 11. Filo (vical), L. Hcnrv and AV. Lord (piano), and J. le Comte (humour).
