COMBINED CRICKET

Continuation Seems Assured SATISFACTION EXPRESSED Jadging from the opinions expressed at the gathering of cricketers at the Hastings Sub-Association’s annual smoke concert last evening, the continuation of the combined senior championship competition, instituted this season, is assured. The general feeling was that the nninlgtiniation of the two competitions hail proved the success anticipated and had been beneficial to cricket generally in Hawke’s Bay. "The amalgamation has been a great success,” commented Mr. >S. 1. Jones, "and there is not the slightest doubt that the continuation of the combined competition will also prove a success.”-

"The combined competition,” said Mr. L. J. Fisher, "if it had done nothing else, at least lias brought about a feeling of friendship between the administrators and players of the two towns. There can be no doubting that it will lead to nn improvement in the standard of play generally.” Speaking on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay association, the secretary, Mr. E. E. Elliot, expressed appreciation of the manner in which the Hastings .Sub-As-sociation had co-operated in the matter of the combined competition. "We in Napier are all of the opinion that the combined competition should be eontinned, and we feel that it is in the best interests of cricket in this district,” ho said.

Fishermen Fall In Eea. A large trevalli which took a piece of meat intended for a herring was the beginning of an unusual train of events that was to end in two men falling into the sea at New Plymouth the other afternoon. All ended happily, however, with the catching of the fish, something of a feat considering that it was on a herring line. I nan attempt to gaff the fish, a member of the party slipped and joined the fish in the cold salt water. He had just regained the wharf when another young man also fell victim to the treacherous surface in an endeavour to catch hold of tho trevalli only two feet away, ami dropped head first into the water. Although bedraggled, the party went home triumphant with a fish that between seven and eight pounds and all the more valuable because of tho excitement and trouble it had given them.
