VERONAL AND OPIUM

Death from Cancer Accelerated <Bv Telegraph-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 9. A verdict that Sidney John Anderson, aged 47, motor mechanic, died at the Auckland Hospital on February 17 and that death was caused by veronal and opium poisoning associated with toxiemia arising from cancer of the bowel, such veronal and opium having been administered to alleviate suffering and not with intent to kill, was returned by the coroner, Mr Wilson, at the conclusion of th© inquest to-day. Tho coroner said that he understood veronal had been placed on the list of dangerous drugs. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said ho understood it had been placed on tho list from April 1 this year, but had no’t verified the fact. The coroner said that a week before Mr Anderson’s death the cancer was beyond the aid of operative science. He felt convinced that he would not have died of cancer on Monday morning, but would have lingered much longer. The attitude of the law in such circumstances, Mr Wilson added, was that no person was permitted to accelerate the deat hof a person who was dying and no person had a legal right to accelerate Mr Anderson’s death.
