Hastings Surprise Party Many New Zealanders arc turning Jieir steps to the' Homeland this autumn. Among those who are setting out next month are Mr and Mrs W. B. Nicol, of York street, Hastings, who are planning an extensive tour of Canada and England lasting over nine months.

IT ith the purpose of expressing their good wishes lor a happy holiday several of Airs Nicol’s friends gathered at her home on Friday afternoon. The party was a complete surprise to Mrs Nicol, but she welcomed all the unexpected guests most warmly, and everyone spent a very pleasant afternoon.

As the day was cool, a big log fire in the drawing-room was a welcome sight. Large bowls of Michaelmas daisies decorated the room, while here and there some choice late roses added a fragrant touch. Some original competitions arranged bv one of the party provided au amusing occupation for the afternoon. The first of these was an “age” competition in which a varied set of questions had to be answered with word 0 ending in age. Mrs Gordon Sutherland won the prize.

Afternoon tea was served in the dining-room, and then all present had a chance to express personally their good wishes to Mrs Nicol. A small token of regard had been previously presented to Mrs Nicol with the good wishes of all her friends for a happy holiday and a safe return. After tea another competition wa» enjoyed. Several pictures were hung round the walls, each of which represented the name of a street in Hastings. Much laughter was caused and memories tested to recall different street names. The winner was Miss Olivo Nelson, who received a daiut' 1 prize. . . Later everyone joined in singing

“Auld Lang Syne,” and cheers were given for Mrs Nicol. Mrs Nicol expressed her appreciation of the kind thoughts and good wishes of her friends, and everyone agreed that the afternoon had been • most enjoyable one*
