CHRIST PASSED BY
Christ passed by just now! I knew it by the sudden hush that fell Among the birds. The flowers held their breath. Such wonder seemed to dwell Around His path! The grasses did not stir, Or tremble at the imprint of His Feet. And in the stillness, hung in incense sweet, The clinging breath of myrrh! Christ passed softly by. I knew it, for His garments brushed my heart! And sudden glory swept across my eyes! Oh, soul, is was a moment set apart From Life’s unrest. A breath of Love so sweet To weave with Joy in Life’s eternal crown, And keep it white—until I cast it down, In beauty at His Feet! Christ passed by just now. A flame of crimson glory swept the sky, And all the birds burst into sudden song! And every flower stirred as if that sigh Of rare delight must break in trembling joy! Oh, such a wealth of fragrance fell around! His Feet have planted glory in the ground, That Earth can ne’er destroy! —I. A. OFF AW AY.
