CHAMPIONSHIP CHESS
Positions at N.Z. Congress FOURTH ROUND COMPLETED WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. Championship play in the 45th New Zealand Chess Congress was advanced on Saturday to the fourth round in both men’s tournaments. Two further rounds will be played to-day. In the major championship A. W. Gyles las 't— unbeaten), by defeating C. J. S. I’urdie, drew equal with him in the lead, with the additional advantage of having one game in hand, whereas Purdie has suffered a loss. R. Watt, D. Langley, and A. S. Goldsmith head the minor championship, but the first two have each lost a game, while Goldsmith has one to play. Mrs Abbott is as yet unbeaten in the women’s championship.
