Woman “High in Society” NAME SUPPRESSED MEANTIME A 26-year-old woman who, according to her counsel Mr. A. H. D. Mayne, “enjoys a very high position in society,’’ was brought before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., at the Napier Police Court this morning and charged with stealing £9. Her name was suppressed till the case is heard on Monday morning.
Detective-Sergeant Nuttall prose cuted, and Mr Mayne appeared on behalf of the accused. She pleaded not guilty. Mr Nuttall said that he thought tho accused intended pleading guilty, and on that score he had not brought the necessary witnesses. He asked for a remand till Monday morning. Mr Mayne said that at the time the woman said she would plead guilty she had not received legal advice. He had advised her to plead not guilty, “I make a strong plea for the suppression of her name,” he said. “This girl enjoys a very high position in society, and if her name is published it may do her great harm.” Mr Miller said the fact of her being a female did not warrant her name being suppressed. Many people made similar applications because the person concerned was a female, but it had to be remembered that suppression should be granted only in special circumstances.
He made an order for suppression pending the hearing of the charge on Monday.
