FREE STATE AND LEAGUE

Motion for Withdrawal Lo»t

MR. DE VALERA’S STAND

(Received 5, 11.45 a.m.) DUBLIN, Dec. 4

The Fianua Fail convention heavily deieated a resolution that the Free titate withdraw from the League ot Nations unless it recognised Ireland’s independence. Mr. de Valera explained that the League at the moment probably could not attend to questions of Ireland's re. lations with England. The i'reo btato could go to the League only if peace were threatened; otherwise the 1/eague would become a Court in which all sorts of questions might be brought up. “Nevertheless,” he added, “membership of the League does not prevent our working here in unity and independence.”

Why did Italy transgress the Covenant? Britain had not transgressed her obligations in this matter. There hatl been manoeuvring between tho Powers which made nauseating reading. It would require the strength of all the small nations of the league to achieve a peace which would respect Abyssinian independence.
