UNUSUAL FIRE ALARM
Truck Collides With Post BRIGADE GOES TO SCENE The setting off of the automatic fire alarm at the corner of Karamu road and St. Aubyii street when the telegraph post to which it is affixed was struck by a light truck driven by Mr. M. L. Carberry, of Haumoana, was responsible for the Hustings Fire Brigade being culled out this morning at 10.40 o’clock. The truck was proceeding along Karamu road from the direction of the showgrounds and was turning into St. Aubyn street when the steering failed to respond, with the result that it struck the telegraph pole fairly severely, breaking the windscreen and doing damage to the radiator and body of the car. The impact on the post was sufficient to dislodge the pin in the automatic fire alarm on the post and to set in mcj’on the delicate mechanism which connects the call box with the Fire Station. The glass front of the box was unbroken. At this time the show traffic was almost at its heaviest and the driver of the heavy fire machine, Mr. A. Richmond, had a difficult drive through the crowded streets, having to swerve alarmingly on occasions to avoid other moving traffic on his route. However, he accomplished his trip without mishap, and he and the other members of the brigade who answered the call were made aware of the unusual cause of the affirm being given.
